“BeeFriendly” Bee Stewards
Native Bee Conservation on the North Shore
The “BeeFriendly” Native Bee Stewardship program is a volunteer based community program for the identification and monitoring of the pollinating native bee species present and active active on the North Shore and surrounding areas. The goal of the program is to recruit a network of volunteers from all sectors; including municipal staffs, local residents, community groups, schools, business’ and first nations, to participate in an annual native bees survey to assess the over-all health and population levels of the native bees pollinating in our communities.
Each volunteer “BeeSteward” will be instructed how to install and maintain a locally manufactured solitary bee nesting box (shown below), participate in ongoing information exchanges through a new “BeeFriendly Bee-Stewards” website and conducted an annual survey of the nesting boxes in their care each autumn.
The Bee Stewardship Program 2014 is currently under development, more information will be available shortly
